Gypsy Fire Bellydance offers beginner courses is American Tribal Style (ATS) Bellydance, starting Tuesday, January 6.
ATS is an American creation: it melds various traditional dance styles from the Middle East, with influences from India and Spain, into a group, Improvised format. Movements, music and costume all reflect these roots, and create a beautiful aesthetic that highlights the strength, beauty and grace of the women who dance.
Gypsy Fire is offering our last session (mini 4-week) of 2008, starting Tuesday, November 4. We will cover some of the foundational movements, and concepts of American Tribal Style Bellydance in this progressive course. Each week, we'll focus on some stretching and flexibility exercises, and then present one new slow and one new fast movement: the focus of this style of dance is improvisation, so we'll also learn how to "put it all together", through a system of cues and transitions.
No experience necessary, simply wear comfortable clothing: leggings, a full long skirt, and leotard, tank top or sports bra are great. No jeans or baggy T-shirts, please: fitted clothing allows both you and the instructor to better see your movements.
We're returning, refreshed and ready to dance, from our summer break!
This Tuesday, July 15, we will begin our next Basics 1 8-week session. We will cover the foundational movements of American Tribal Style Bellydance, an improvised, group dance, which is based on traditional Middle Eastern dance movements.
This is a progressive course: each week we will learn one slow and one fast move, and you will be dancing in your first class! Please wear comfortable clothing: ie, leggings, full skirt and a fitted or cropped top, sports bra or tank top.
Come join us, and discover the beauty and magic of Tribal Bellydance in a non-competitive, supportive environment!

Gypsy Fire Bellydance is honored to be hosting Sabine, a “Mistress of the Blade” , and her troupe Tribalation! in workshops and performance, Saturday, March 29, 2008!
Does the “danger” and drama of sword dance intrigue you?
Learn from a master the essentials, or hone your skills in 2 workshops:
“Liquid Isolations and the Essence of Sword Dance” 10am-Noon
For beginners to advanced dancers. Distilled sword dance technique: instruction in extending hip, arm, and belly isolations and making them look ever-so-smooth-and-gooey while balancing a sword on the head. We’ll practice sword hold techniques, dramatic presentation, and block a slow, sensual sword dance. Bring a head wrap (preferably cotton) and a sword. 2 hours.

“Dangerous Sword Dancing” 1 pm-3pm
Intermediate and advanced sword work and presentation. Learn moves that take your sword dance from so-so to stunning: sword manipulation, strong isolations, uncanny reverse energy moves, working multiple balance points, traveling moves, powerful floorwork, and original moves and combos like The Slice, and Sabine’s Guillotine! Bring kneepads, cotton headwrap and sword. 2 hours.

These workshops will be progressive, so you can take both for a true sword “intensive”!
There are some swords available to loan, please contact Quinn at gypsyfirebellydance@yahoo.com to reserve yours! (Limited number available, act quickly)

Saturday, March 29: “Liquid Isolations” 10am-12pm, and “Dangerous” 1pm-3pm.
Workshop costs: $25/each or $45/both, if registered by 3/10.
OR $30/each or $55/both, after 3/10 or at the door.
Location: Terpsichorean Dance Studio 1601 NW Newport Ave

Then, that evening, come on down to Sons of Norway Hall, 549 NW Harmon, for a Hafla, featuring Sabine, and her troupe, Tribalation! Hafla begins 7:00 pm, doors open 6:30.
Contact Quinn to register for workshops, reserve a sword, and to sign up for a performance slot in the Hafla (limited slots available, and preference given to workshop participants). (541)420-5416 or gypsyfirebellydance@yahoo.com

About Sabine:
Sabine is a dance artist who has studied Middle Eastern Dance since 1988, and has been performing tribal style belly dance since 1999. She honors the roots of Tribal Belly dance in her classes, with troupe Tribalation! and with student troupe Sister Celebration.
Sabine is a master of “Raks al Sayf,” the sword dance, where the grace and flow of the dance movements are contrasted by the dangerous sharpness of the huge Turkish Scimitars that she balances. Sabine has taught her own special brand of “Dangerous Sword Dancing” in workshops and festivals all over the Northwest. Sabine brings a strong and unique presence to the stage. Her dancing has been called "powerful", "mesmerizing", and "beautiful".
Well, I've got to say, the writer of the story in the Source really did a doozy.
To put it bluntly, he fabricated a "story" about bellydance, complete with an "interview" w/2 members of Gypsy Fire.....The reason I say "interviews", is that I'm not sure that he was present at the same one that Julia and I gave.....we were misquoted, and the man *obviously* had some typical, IGNORANT pre-conceived notions about bellydance, that he simply used us to create "facts" about the dance that would support the simple conclusion that: "....the purpose of bellydancing- to entice arousal" Basically, the usual: bellydancing=stripping...

AAAAAARGH!!!!!! I am so frustrated that we personally, and that bellydancers in general have been portrayed like this again, and in a local, widely read, publication!

I wanted to put the word out there, that this article does NOT represent what we talked about in the interview, and does NOT represent my views about dance, and to let you all know that I am embarrassed to have my name and picture attached to this in any way, shape or form.....
Please write to the Source, if you feel the need to rebut the "story"....I know I plan to....

Thanks!

I am a member of the drum/dance troupe Belaharr in Austin. We have a new CD of the drum music we play in performance. These are really are good for tribal/fusion dance, and a couple would be great for fire dancing. You can hear samples and/or order the CD at www.rythmpig.com or http://cdbaby.com/cd/belaharr. The Rythmpig website also has a couple of my new ones up - somebody could do something really cool with the one titled Seventh Sister (but you need to want to dance a 7/8 number).

Have fun with 'em and let me know if you use any of them in performance - builds good karma you know.

Hello all!
Hope you are enjoying the season! While we look towards the end of 2006, it's also time to begin planning 2007....

Gypsy Fire, Bend, Oregon's best-known Tribal Bellydance troupe will resume classes, starting January 2, 2007.

We offer Beginning classes (appropriate for those with no dance experience, or as a review for those who have studied this form before...) in 8-week sessions. This class is a progressive course, so each week you will learn a new slow, and a new fast move, increasing your dance movement vocabulary......you will be dancing in your first class! American Tribal Style bellydance is based on a language of movement from traditional Middle Eastern dance, structured in a way that the group works together IMPROVISATIONALLY to create the dance on the spot, and to communicate with each other through the dance!

Our 2007 schedule is as follows:

Basics 1: Beginning Tribal:
Session 1: January 2-February 20
Session 2: February 27-April 17
Session 3: April 24-June 12
{Summer break}
Session 4: July 10-August 28
Session 5: September 4-October 23
(Mini) Session 6: October 30-November 20
{Holiday break....See you in 2008!}

Time: Tuesdays, 8:00-9:00 pm
Location: Terpsichorean Dance Studio 1601 NW Newport Ave.
Tuition: $60/session ($30 for Session 6/Mini session)
$9/drop in

Basics 2 is the continuation of Basics 1. Here you will learn further concepts for improvisation: leading and following, formations; and also you will expand your movement vocabulary, with complex movements, turns, and layering of movements. As well, we will cover some basic music theory, and expand on your zill repertoire! ***You must have taken at *least* one 8-week session of classes from Gypsy Fire instructors in order to attend this class. Thanks!
Time: Tuesdays, 9:00-10:00 pm
Location: Terpsichorean Dance Studio

All classes include warm up and stretching for increasing flexibility and muscle identity: both crucial to gaining greater body awareness and muscle isolation. Please wear comfortable clothing: leggings, a full skirt, and a leotard or midriff-baring top recommended to allow for greater visibility for both student and teacher.

For more information about Gypsy Fire Tribal Bellydance, our classes, or upcoming events, please visit our website: http://www.gypsyfirebellydance.com or call (541)420-5416.

Hope to see you there!
Happy Holidays!
